The bigsurfshop Bantry windsurfing slalom event this year, also served to be round 4 of the 2015 Irish Windsurfing Association championship calendar, and took place over the weekend of the 8th and 9th August.
19 competitors took part in figure of eight slalom racing at the bigsurfshop Bantry windsurfing event, consisting of a wide course set into the bay, with a fast start straight into gybe no. 1. Given the conditions, all races could be completed on the same course over the weekend, with the exception of the the Gold fleet rounding the outer mark twice, and the Fun/Silver fleet rounding it once. Competitors had the luxury of an uncramped start line, with each fleet racing in indepentently of one another.
In the Gold fleet, it’s fair to say that Hannes Louet Feisser dominated with excellent consistency throughout all the races, taking the bullet in every race, even if he wasn’t first off the start line. Marc Roosli shone through when it mattered to gain a high second place ranking result for the national championships, while Graeme Kidd and Kevin McGuinness tied for second place in the event overall results.
In the Silver / Fun fleet, Paul Rayner was delighted to learn that he gained a lead in the ranked event results, while first time racer Tomas Cikotas took the win in the event overall results. I’m sure we’ll be seeing both of these guys on a race course again soon.
The event coincided with some fantastic longboat racing in the harbour on both days, with the dingys coming out to play on Sunday morning also…all in all, a spectacular sight from the waters edge for any and all passers by. For the lucky few that stayed on until the Monday, they were treated to Bantry Bay windsurfing at it’s best, with powered up 7.6m slalom conditions, heat and sun to be enjoyed!
