INFORMATION ON BUOYANCY AIDS

Personal flotation devices (PFD’s) have 4 classifications based on their buoyancy, which is measured in Newtons (N). There are four ratings… 50N, 100N, 150N and 275N. The higher the rating equals more float. Life vests have at least 100N, and anything below is deemd a flotation device or buoyancy aid.
It is recommended to wear a 50N buoyancy aid when practising water sports (stand up paddling, kayaking, etc.). Buoyancy aids are designed to keep to keep a person's head above the waterline, provided that they are conscious and can swim.
